Water companies issue advice to consumers as the country faces prolonged dry weather and possible drought conditions.
Water companies across the UK are warning customers to be mindful of their water consumption as the country grapples with dry weather conditions, raising concerns over potential droughts.
The National Drought Group recently elevated England to a “Prolonged Dry Weather” status, signalling a critical step toward an official drought declaration. The Met Office reported that July 2022 was the driest July for England since 1935, with England receiving only 35% of its usual rainfall for the month and Wales 53%.
In response to these conditions, several water companies have implemented hosepipe bans, while others are urging customers to conserve water. Below are updates from key water providers across the UK:
– Anglian Water: Operating in the driest region of the UK, Anglian Water reported receiving only 20% of the usual rainfall in July. Although reservoir levels remain stable at 80%, the company is monitoring river levels closely and encouraging customers to conserve water.
– Dwr Cymru Welsh Water: Welsh Water has introduced a temporary hosepipe ban in Pembrokeshire, following the driest conditions in the area since 1976. This ban affects over 2% of the population it serves, and the company stresses the importance of ensuring enough water supply for the coming months.
– Northumbrian Water: Currently, Northumbrian Water does not foresee any need for restrictions this summer. The company is committed to managing environmental resources responsibly and closely monitoring water levels.
– Severn Trent: Severn Trent has not imposed any hosepipe bans for over 27 years, but continues to monitor water levels closely. The company has provided customers with tips to reduce water waste, including using a bucket and sponge to clean cars and watering plants with a can in the evening.
– South West Water: South West Water has not yet introduced a hosepipe ban but is advising customers on ways to conserve water. If the situation worsens, restrictions may be implemented in the future to protect water resources.
– Thames Water: Thames Water has activated its statutory drought plan, which includes steps to manage water use. The company has already begun promoting water-saving tips and is preparing to implement a temporary use ban if needed.
– United Utilities Water: United Utilities has no plans to restrict water use but continues to encourage customers to be mindful of their water consumption.
– Wessex Water: While no restrictions are currently in place, Wessex Water encourages all customers to use water responsibly, ensuring that resources remain available for everyone.
– Yorkshire Water: Yorkshire Water is urging customers to reduce water use by avoiding unnecessary tasks such as washing cars or watering lawns. The company is also working to fix leaks to prevent further wastage.
As the UK faces ongoing dry conditions, water companies are emphasising the importance of responsible water use to help prevent the need for more severe measures in the future.
