A bipartisan resolution shows American solidarity with those risking their lives to challenge Iran’s regime.
The U.S. House of Representatives has expressed strong support for the people of Iran, overwhelmingly passing a resolution to stand in solidarity with those protesting against the Iranian government’s oppressive theocracy. The resolution was approved with a significant 420-1 vote, signalling a rare moment of bipartisan agreement in a deeply divided Congress.
The resolution highlights the ongoing struggles of Iranian citizens, particularly in the wake of the tragic death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in police custody. Her death in September has sparked widespread protests, with individuals risking imprisonment and death to voice their opposition to the regime. “It is crucial that the U.S. House of Representatives, as a symbol of democracy, stands united in supporting the courageous people of Iran,” said Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., during the debate.
The vote came shortly after the United States, along with Europe and the UK, imposed new sanctions on Iranian officials and entities involved in the violent suppression of the protests. These sanctions targeted Iran’s military and police forces, further isolating the government for its heavy-handed tactics.
Since the protests began in mid-September, more than 500 protesters have been killed and over 19,000 detained, with at least 16 facing death sentences in secret hearings, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran. Authorities have not released official figures, but the brutal crackdown continues as protestors demand greater freedoms.
The protests were ignited by Amini’s death after being detained by the morality police for allegedly violating the strict dress code imposed on women, including the compulsory hijab. Since then, many women have led the charge, defiantly removing their hijabs in protest. The movement has become one of the most significant challenges to Iran’s theocratic rule since the 1979 revolution.
“The Iranian people need to know that we see their courage and understand the risks they are taking,” said Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., the ranking chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. “Stay strong, for freedom will ultimately prevail over tyranny.”
