Liz Harrington highlights Trump’s support for Ken Paxton as George P Bush prepares for the May 24 runoff.
Donald Trump’s spokesperson Liz Harrington has made the former president’s position in the Texas attorney general runoff race unmistakably clear by targeting George P Bush, the son of Jeb Bush.
On Tuesday, Harrington shared a graphic on Twitter contrasting Trump and current attorney general Ken Paxton with Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor whom Trump defeated in the 2016 Republican presidential primaries, and his son George, who currently serves as Texas land commissioner.
“I know whose side I’m on!” Harrington wrote in the tweet.
George P Bush has sought to align himself with Trump despite the former president’s history of attacking the Bush family. At a recent rally, the younger Bush displayed beer koozies with his and Trump’s images shaking hands. Despite this, Trump has been critical of the Bush family in the past, famously labelling Jeb Bush as “low-energy” and sharing a controversial retweet that referenced his mother Columba Bush’s Mexican heritage—though Trump later deleted it.
Jeb Bush, initially the frontrunner in the 2016 Republican primary, withdrew from the race after his performance in the South Carolina primary.
George P Bush had hoped to challenge Ken Paxton in the general election, but Trump has pledged his support for Paxton, who has faced federal indictments and was a prominent figure at the Stop the Steal rally before the January 6 riots.
The two candidates squared off in the Republican primary earlier this month. While Paxton secured 42.74 per cent of the vote, he fell short of the majority needed to win outright, setting up the runoff. George P Bush captured 22.78 per cent, with other contenders, including former judge Eva Guzman and Representative Louie Gohmert, splitting the remaining votes.
The runoff election is scheduled for 24 May, with Paxton and George P Bush vying to determine the Republican nomination for Texas attorney general.
