England announces their XI for the Second Test with Saqib Mahmood replacing Mark Wood due to injury.
England has named their playing XI for the second Test against the West Indies in Barbados on Wednesday, with Saqib Mahmood set to make his Test debut in place of the injured Mark Wood. This marks the only change to the team that secured a draw in Antigua.
Ollie Robinson, who has been dealing with a back spasm, remains absent as England adopt a cautious approach. Despite Robinson’s 10 overs of bowling during Monday’s training suggesting a potential return, the team has opted not to rush him back. Robinson had previously suffered a breakdown during his last Test match against Australia in Hobart.
With Robinson unavailable, Chris Woakes and Craig Overton retain their spots in the side after their efforts in Antigua, where they shared three wickets over 80 overs. They will share the new ball in this fixture.
Saqib Mahmood has been part of the England setup for a while, having played in both white-ball formats and standing out in ODIs. England captain Joe Root praised Mahmood’s maturity and skill, noting his unique bowling style.
“Although he hasn’t had much international experience, he understands his role and how to approach his game,” Root said. “He’s impressed us with his control and ability, particularly with reverse swing. His skill offers us variety and tactical flexibility.”
Completing the bowling attack are Ben Stokes, who bowled an impressive 41 overs during the Antigua match, and left-arm spinner Jack Leach. The pitch in Barbados is expected to favour batting conditions, although it may offer some turn as the match progresses.
This marks a crucial moment for England as they aim to build on their performance and adapt to conditions for a strong showing against the West Indies.
