A refined blend of luxury, comfort, and thrilling power for a new generation of driving enthusiasts
There are two distinct types of Ferrari. One is the unmistakable mid-engined supercar, designed for extreme performance with eye-catching designs and a strong link to Formula One. These models are often showy and bold, designed to command attention. However, it’s the other type, the grand tourer, that tends to capture my heart. These are the Ferraris meant for long, luxurious drives across scenic landscapes, offering more elegance than flash—perfect for a relaxed, stylish journey with a companion in tow and just a couple of bags in the boot.
This is where the Ferrari Roma comes into play. A front-engined, rear-wheel-drive turbocharged V8, the Roma is an ode to classical design. With its sleek lines and evocative engine sound, this car exudes sophistication in every curve. It’s so charming, it would likely melt the hearts of even the most environmentally-conscious groups, such as Extinction Rebellion. Though high-end cars like the Roma are often associated with opulence and waste, they generally cover far fewer miles and are often cherished for decades, meaning they ultimately have a smaller environmental footprint than mass-market vehicles.
Taking the Roma out of its natural Italian riviera surroundings, I drove it through the picturesque Matlock Bath Illuminations, a family-friendly event in the Peak District, surrounded by stunning views and winding roads. Despite the narrow, often crowded lanes, the Roma handled the drive with grace. It’s a car that doesn’t need to show off; it effortlessly accelerates, easily reaching top speeds with minimal effort. When it’s time to overtake, the Roma responds without hesitation, but it’s clear that the car itself has nothing to prove.
On the motorway, even at legal speeds, the Roma’s powerful engine shines. The 4-litre turbocharged V8 might not be the largest, but its high-revving performance (over 5,000rpm) combined with a race-derived dual clutch and intelligent software delivers exhilarating acceleration. This car is all about communication; every movement feels connected, responsive, and thrilling.
A standout feature of the Roma is its unconventional controls, including the absence of traditional stalks for indicators and wipers. Instead, these are operated by buttons on the steering wheel, which, while innovative, can be somewhat tricky to navigate. The gear lever between the seats and the manual paddle shifts require a specific ritual, which might be complicated for some, while the tiny buttons for cruise control and other functions demand nimble fingers.
The Roma also features a unique “marinetto” dial on the steering wheel, allowing drivers to switch between modes that adjust braking, traction control, steering, and suspension for optimal performance. Whether you’re cruising in comfort, engaging sport mode for a more thrilling drive, or navigating wet conditions with stability settings, this dial offers a level of flexibility that enhances the driving experience.
Though the Roma’s aluminium body construction makes it lighter than it appears, it still feels substantial, planted, and agile on the road. Despite being a large coupe, the Roma’s interior feels cosy, offering adequate space for both driver and passenger. The medium-sized touchscreen in the centre console is conveniently placed for easy access by both parties, making it clear that the Roma is designed for couples who enjoy driving together.
As with all Ferraris, the Roma offers an array of bespoke options. The use of premium materials, such as full-grain Frau leather, Alcantara trim, and carbon-fibre accents, is impeccable. The interior is a fusion of luxury and functionality, with the meticulous craftsmanship evident throughout.
The Roma’s design is refreshingly simple, yet striking. Its shark-nose front and the body-coloured grille make it stand out without being overly flashy, setting it apart from its rivals like Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz. Ferrari’s design philosophy for the Roma embraces understated glamour rather than excessive glitz, making it a true classic in the making.
Ferrari’s roots lie in creating track-focused cars, but over the decades, they’ve honed the art of producing luxury road cars, such as the Roma, that balance beauty, power, and comfort. The Maranello factory in Emilia-Romagna continues to produce these hand-built masterpieces, contributing to a rich legacy of automotive excellence. The world is undoubtedly better for having Ferraris like the Roma, just as the Derbyshire Dales are better for being explored behind its wheel.
Arrivederci, Roma. This remarkable Ferrari will leave you smiling, no matter where your journey takes you.
