Pop icons dominate the top categories ahead of the February ceremony
The Grammy nominations for 2023 were revealed on Tuesday, with pop superstars Adele, Harry Styles, and Beyoncé taking centre stage, each receiving multiple nods in prestigious categories, including Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year.
Adele’s long-awaited return to the spotlight came with her fourth album 30, which topped both the UK and US charts in 2021. At the Grammy announcement, she received recognition for her hit single Easy On Me, earning nominations for Best Pop Solo Performance, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Music Video. Additionally, her Adele: One Night Only special, featuring an interview with Oprah Winfrey and a live concert performance at Griffith Observatory, secured a nomination for Best Music Film.
Meanwhile, Harry Styles continued his triumphant year with his third album Harry's House, which was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Non-Engineered Album (Non-Classical). His chart-topping hit As It Was also earned nominations for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Music Video.
Beyoncé made a strong comeback with her seventh studio album Renaissance, blending house music and Afrobeats. Her single Break My Soul received nominations for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Dance/Electronic Recording, and Best Mixed Recording. Additionally, Beyoncé earned multiple R&B nominations, including nods for Virgo’s Groove (Best R&B Performance), Plastic Off The Sofa (Best Traditional R&B Performance), and Cuff It (Best R&B Song).
Other British nominees included Ozzy Osbourne, Sam Smith, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Florence & The Machine, and Arctic Monkeys. Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran were nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, with Smith’s Unholy (featuring Kim Petras) and Sheeran’s Bam Bam (featuring Camilla Cabello) both receiving recognition. Florence & The Machine and Arctic Monkeys also garnered nominations in the Alternative Music Performance category.
Lizzo’s About Damn Time earned nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, with her album Special nominated for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.
Kendrick Lamar’s album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers received a nomination for Album of the Year, while his track The Heart Part 5 was nominated for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song.
British indie rock duo Wet Leg also earned Grammy nods, including Best Remixed Recording for Too Late Now and Best Non-Engineered Album (Non-Classical), alongside a Best New Artist nomination. They are joined in this category by Eurovision 2021 winners Måneskin.
In addition to the usual categories, the 2023 Grammy ceremony will introduce five new categories, including Songwriter of the Year (Non-Classical), which aims to celebrate the best composers in the industry. The other new categories include Best Spoken Word Poetry Album, Alternative Music Performance, Americana Music Performance, and Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media.
The Recording Academy also introduced a special merit award for Best Song for Social Change, recognising lyrics that address pressing social issues.
The 65th Annual Grammy Awards will take place on February 5, 2023, in Los Angeles.
