The next leader will be tasked with addressing recent scandals and reforming the force

The recruitment process for the next Metropolitan Police Commissioner has begun following Dame Cressida Dick’s departure last week. Candidates are being asked to lead the organisation through a period of significant change, focusing on making the force “demonstrably more professional.”

The Met Police has faced a series of high-profile scandals, such as the murder of Sarah Everard by serving officer Wayne Couzens and the discovery of misogynistic messages exchanged by officers at Charing Cross station. These controversies, coupled with a loss of public confidence, have shaped the need for strong leadership to address concerns about police culture and accountability.

Dame Cressida Dick was ousted in February after losing the support of London Mayor Sadiq Khan. Her deputy, Sir Stephen House, is currently serving as the interim commissioner until a permanent successor is appointed, expected by summer.

The official job advert states that the new commissioner must “lead the service through significant change” while implementing “empowering leadership to address concerns around police conduct and tackling institutional culture.” The successful candidate will also have the critical responsibility of rebuilding trust with Londoners, particularly with women, girls, and Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities.

Mayor Sadiq Khan has been vocal about the challenges ahead, emphasising the need for the next leader to acknowledge the scope of issues facing the force. “Regaining the trust and confidence of London’s communities is crucial to policing by consent and making our city safer,” he said.

Dame Cressida Dick will remain on unused annual leave until her official departure date on April 24. In a recent public message, she stressed that the role of the new commissioner would be vital in maintaining safety and confidence in London’s global, diverse capital city.

The selection for this high-profile role comes at a pivotal time for the Met, as efforts to rebuild its reputation and re-establish public faith are expected to dominate the priorities of the new leadership.
