The iconic actress, who was honoured with an MBE for her contributions to drama and charity, passed away, leaving behind a legacy in entertainment.

Cleo Sylvestre, the groundbreaking actress who became a prominent figure in film, television, music, and stage since the 1960s, has passed away at the age of 79, her agent confirmed. Also known by her birth name, Cleopatra Palmer, Sylvestre made significant contributions to the entertainment industry throughout her career.

She is perhaps best remembered for her role as Melanie Harper, the adopted daughter of Meg Richardson, in the iconic ITV series Crossroads. Her acting career spanned decades, with notable film appearances including the 2014 Paddington film and 1993’s The Punk. She also made guest appearances in several beloved TV series such as The Bill, New Tricks, Grange Hill, Doctor Who, and Coronation Street.

A statement from Fulcrum Talent, released on Friday, expressed deep sorrow: “It is with profound regret that we announce the passing of Cleo Sylvestre MBE this morning. Much loved by her colleagues and admired for her pioneering work, she will be remembered as both a trailblazer and a dear friend. She will be greatly missed by so many. We kindly ask for privacy for her family during this challenging time.”

Aside from her acting career, Sylvestre was also a talented musician. Under the stage name Cleo, she collaborated with the Rolling Stones in 1964, covering To Know Him Is To Love Him, and later performed with her own blues band, Honey B Mama And Friends.

In 2023, Sylvestre was honoured with an MBE for her outstanding services to drama and charity, with a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. Her recent work included roles in the ITV thriller Platform 7 and Channel 5’s updated version of All Creatures Great and Small.

Her passing marks the end of a remarkable career that inspired many in the entertainment industry.
