Backup Dancer Reflects on Relationship with Mariah Carey, Shares Gratitude Amid ‘Mixed Emotions’

Bryan Tanaka, former boyfriend of Mariah Carey, has officially confirmed their breakup, describing it as an amicable separation. In an emotional post on Instagram, the 40-year-old dancer shared his thoughts on the end of his seven-year relationship with the 54-year-old pop icon.

Tanaka expressed his gratitude for the time spent with Carey, writing, “With mixed emotions, I share this personal update regarding my amicable separation from Mariah Carey after seven extraordinary years together. Our decision to embark on different paths is mutual, and as we navigate these separate journeys, we do so with profound respect and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the invaluable time we’ve shared.”

The couple first began dating in 2016, and Tanaka reflected on the memories and artistic collaborations they created together, stating, “The memories we’ve created and the artistic collaborations are etched into my heart forever.” He went on to praise Carey’s dedication to her family and career, highlighting how she inspired him throughout their relationship. He also expressed his appreciation for Carey’s children, noting their kindness and warmth.

Tanaka concluded his statement by requesting that fans respect their privacy during this sensitive time, following widespread rumours of their split. These speculations gained traction when Carey was spotted on a solo trip to Aspen in December, with Tanaka notably absent from her “Merry Christmas One and All!” tour.

Sources close to the couple suggested that their differing desires about starting a family contributed to the breakup, with Tanaka reportedly keen on having children, while Carey was not in agreement. “That’s not where she is at,” a source revealed, adding that Tanaka was ready to focus on his future and personal goals.

Mariah Carey shares 12-year-old twins, son Moroccan and daughter Monroe, with her ex-husband Nick Cannon. Despite their divorce in 2016, Carey and Cannon have maintained a good co-parenting relationship. Carey has often spoken fondly of her children, emphasising the importance of keeping them grounded and aware of the realities of life.

In her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer revealed the significance behind her children’s names, with Monroe being named after Marilyn Monroe and Moroccan inspired by her New York City apartment’s Moroccan-themed decor, where Cannon had proposed.

Tanaka’s statement marks the official end of their relationship, leaving fans with a sense of bittersweet nostalgia for the couple’s shared moments.
