The Queen commends the regiment for its outstanding contributions, including its pivotal role at the King’s coronation.
Camilla, Queen Consort and Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles, has lauded the regiment for its exceptional performance in recent years, notably during the King’s coronation. At the regiment’s biennial awards dinner held at Guildhall in London, the Queen praised the distinguished service of the officers and Riflemen, acknowledging their success in facing various challenges.
In her address to the gathering, Camilla reflected on the regiment’s accomplishments since her previous attendance in 2021. She said, “The last two years have demonstrated The Rifles’ brilliance, from tackling routine challenges to the rare honour of participating in the coronation, where their presence on the marching grounds was executed with incredible finesse.” She also noted the regiment’s resilience in the face of global events, including the ongoing conflicts and the monumental coronation.
The Queen, who has a deep personal connection to The Rifles through her late father, Major Bruce Shand, also expressed admiration for the regiment’s family members. “I know Major Shand would have wanted me to recognise your loved ones, who support your work and keep the home fires burning,” she said.
As part of the 7th Infantry Brigade, known as the Desert Rats, two Battalions of The Rifles continue to carry forward Major Shand’s legacy. Camilla also spoke fondly of the memorable moments from the coronation, remarking, “Seeing 4,000 soldiers, sailors, and airmen on parade was truly remarkable, and the three cheers in the garden of Buckingham Palace were unforgettable.”
Her heartfelt thanks went to 1 Rifles and the Band and Bugles of The Rifles for their distinguished performance at the coronation. “The striking green tunics provided a refreshing contrast to the traditional redcoats and ceremonial lace,” she added.
The event also comes at a time when a new book about the royal family has sparked controversy. Omid Scobie’s book, Endgame, includes unflattering portrayals of several royals, including Queen Camilla, and has generated significant media attention. The Dutch version of the book was temporarily withdrawn from shelves after accusations arose regarding its content.
