Coronation Street star to join Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor in upcoming 2023 series

Millie Gibson, the 18-year-old actress known for her role in Coronation Street, has been revealed as the new companion to the 15th Doctor in the iconic series Doctor Who. During a special live segment on Children In Need, Gibson’s character, Ruby Sunday, was announced as the Doctor’s latest travel companion.

Gibson, who recently won the Best Young Performer award for her portrayal of Kelly Neelan in Coronation Street, will star alongside Ncuti Gatwa, who takes on the role of the 15th Doctor, marking a new era for the long-running show.

In a statement, Gibson expressed her excitement and disbelief, saying, “I am beyond honoured to be cast as the Doctor’s companion. It’s a dream role, and I will do everything I can to live up to the legacy left by previous companions. I can’t wait to join Ncuti on this incredible journey.”

The actress has previously appeared in ITV’s Butterfly and BBC’s Love, Lies and Records.

The announcement comes after Jodie Whittaker’s tenure as the first female Doctor ended with a special episode in October, celebrating the BBC’s centenary. In a surprise twist, Whittaker’s 13th Doctor regenerated into David Tennant, who will now appear as the 14th Doctor in a series of special episodes airing in November 2023.

Gatwa, 30, who will officially take on the 15th Doctor role after Tennant’s specials, spoke highly of his new co-star, saying, “Millie is a natural. She has a spark that draws everyone in and a talent that’s second to none. This adventure is going to be absolutely wild, and I can’t wait to share it with her.”

Russell T Davies, the showrunner for Doctor Who, who has returned to helm the series as it teams up with Disney, praised Gibson’s talent. “Millie is brilliant, dynamic, and clever. I’ve seen her face challenges on Coronation Street, but nothing compares to the adventure ahead for Ruby Sunday,” he said.

The new episodes of Doctor Who, set to air in November 2023, will also commemorate the show’s 60th anniversary. In a significant development, the BBC has partnered with Disney Branded Television, which will see future seasons of Doctor Who available to stream on Disney+ outside of the UK and Ireland.

The announcement was made as part of Children In Need’s 42nd annual fundraiser, where the total raised reached an impressive £15.4 million.

Doctor Who fans can look forward to an exciting new era with Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday, alongside Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor, in what promises to be a thrilling chapter for the beloved sci-fi series.

Tesla CEO and Twitter owner demands ‘hardcore’ work ethic from employees as he faces court battle

Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and recently appointed owner of Twitter, has characterised his vacations as “emails with a view,” a remark made during his testimony at a court hearing in Delaware on Wednesday. Musk is currently defending himself in a lawsuit filed by Tesla shareholders, challenging a compensation package worth over $55 billion that he received from the company’s board of directors.

The comment was made when Musk was questioned by the plaintiff’s attorney, Greg Varallo, about his reported holidays, which included trips with Tesla director James Murdoch. When asked about his time off, Musk remarked, “‘Vacation’ is a strong word,” adding, “For me it’s an email with a view.”

Known for his intense work habits, Musk has publicly stated that he works up to 100 hours a week, sleeps only about six hours a night, and often skips breakfast. Since acquiring Twitter for $44 billion last month, Musk has pushed his “hardcore” approach to work even further, imposing high expectations on his new employees.

This week, he sent an email to the Twitter workforce, instructing them to adopt an “extremely hardcore” work ethic or risk termination. “This will mean working long hours at high intensity,” Musk wrote, stressing that only exceptional performance would be deemed satisfactory. Staff members were required to confirm their commitment to the “new Twitter” by clicking a link, with a deadline set for Thursday. Those who failed to comply were informed they would receive three months’ severance pay.

This call for “hardcore” dedication comes shortly after Musk reversed Twitter’s remote work policy, mandating that employees work from the office for a minimum of 40 hours per week. Since Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, the company has undergone significant restructuring, with numerous layoffs and the introduction of new features that were later scrapped. Musk has claimed that he’s been staying at Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters in an effort to “fix” the company.

Earlier this year, Musk’s extravagant holidays garnered attention when photos of him lounging shirtless on a yacht in Greece went viral. One particular image, where Musk was seen with a drink in hand and a towel around his waist, sparked numerous memes, with some focusing on his pale skin. Musk responded to the online jokes, including one that compared his appearance to a bulldog standing on its hind legs, by cheekily asserting, “My calves are bigger tho.”

Reflecting on the memes, Musk posted, “Haha damn, maybe I should take off my shirt more often… free the nip!!”

After leading the party through turbulent times, Pelosi announces her decision to hand over the reins to the next generation

Nancy Pelosi has officially declared that she will step down from her position as House Democratic leader following the party’s loss of control in the midterm elections. The announcement comes after a series of challenges, including the party’s successful defence against a red wave, and the assault on her husband, Paul Pelosi, at their San Francisco home last month. Despite these challenges, Republicans are poised to hold a narrow majority in the upcoming Congress.

In an emotional speech delivered on the House floor, the 82-year-old Pelosi reflected on her time in office, stating, “The Capitol is a temple of our democracy, of our constitution and our highest ideals.” She added, “It’s time for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus. We must move boldly into the future, grounded by the principles that have guided us.”

President Biden spoke to Pelosi shortly after her announcement, praising her historic tenure as Speaker of the House.

For the past few days, Pelosi had been contemplating her future, consulting with colleagues, friends, and supporters. According to her deputy chief of staff, Drew Hammill, Pelosi had been flooded with messages and had closely followed the election results from key battleground states.

The likely successors to Pelosi’s leadership are House Democratic caucus chairman Hakeem Jeffries from New York and assistant speaker Katherine Clark from Massachusetts, both of whom are seen as the next generation of Democratic leaders.

Despite her departure from leadership, Pelosi assured that Democrats would continue to support President Biden’s agenda and exert influence over the narrow Republican majority in the coming Congress.

Pelosi’s political career spans decades, having first entered the House in 1987. She became the House Democratic leader in 2003, and served as Speaker from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019. Notably, she is the first woman to ever hold the position of Speaker. During her time in office, she worked under four presidents: George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden.

On the international stage, Pelosi earned respect for her outspoken advocacy on human rights issues, particularly concerning China, and made headlines with her visit to Taiwan earlier this year, becoming the highest-ranking American official to do so.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a rising star in the party, cited Pelosi as a key inspiration for young women in politics, noting that Pelosi had normalised the idea of female leadership in Washington.

Throughout her career, Pelosi was instrumental in passing landmark legislation, including the Affordable Care Act during Obama’s presidency and ensuring the defeat of Republican efforts to repeal the law during the Trump years. As Speaker again in 2018, Pelosi oversaw two impeachments of Donald Trump, as well as major Covid-19 relief packages.

Even with the rise of more progressive voices within the party, Pelosi demonstrated her political acumen by managing to unite the diverse factions within the Democratic caucus. Despite fierce opposition from the right, she remained a formidable leader.

Representative Jamaal Bowman, a fellow New Yorker, praised Pelosi as “a giant of a person,” highlighting her lifetime of service and the leadership example she set for the party.

As the GOP prepares to take control of the House in January 2023, it is expected that House minority leader Kevin McCarthy will be elected Speaker. The Republicans, having secured their 218th seat with Mike Garcia’s victory in California’s 27th district, will now work to establish their own leadership.

As the transition unfolds, President Biden has reiterated his commitment to collaborating with any lawmakers, whether Democrat or Republican, who are willing to work together for the benefit of the American people.

A refined blend of luxury, comfort, and thrilling power for a new generation of driving enthusiasts

There are two distinct types of Ferrari. One is the unmistakable mid-engined supercar, designed for extreme performance with eye-catching designs and a strong link to Formula One. These models are often showy and bold, designed to command attention. However, it’s the other type, the grand tourer, that tends to capture my heart. These are the Ferraris meant for long, luxurious drives across scenic landscapes, offering more elegance than flash—perfect for a relaxed, stylish journey with a companion in tow and just a couple of bags in the boot.

This is where the Ferrari Roma comes into play. A front-engined, rear-wheel-drive turbocharged V8, the Roma is an ode to classical design. With its sleek lines and evocative engine sound, this car exudes sophistication in every curve. It’s so charming, it would likely melt the hearts of even the most environmentally-conscious groups, such as Extinction Rebellion. Though high-end cars like the Roma are often associated with opulence and waste, they generally cover far fewer miles and are often cherished for decades, meaning they ultimately have a smaller environmental footprint than mass-market vehicles.

Taking the Roma out of its natural Italian riviera surroundings, I drove it through the picturesque Matlock Bath Illuminations, a family-friendly event in the Peak District, surrounded by stunning views and winding roads. Despite the narrow, often crowded lanes, the Roma handled the drive with grace. It’s a car that doesn’t need to show off; it effortlessly accelerates, easily reaching top speeds with minimal effort. When it’s time to overtake, the Roma responds without hesitation, but it’s clear that the car itself has nothing to prove.

On the motorway, even at legal speeds, the Roma’s powerful engine shines. The 4-litre turbocharged V8 might not be the largest, but its high-revving performance (over 5,000rpm) combined with a race-derived dual clutch and intelligent software delivers exhilarating acceleration. This car is all about communication; every movement feels connected, responsive, and thrilling.

A standout feature of the Roma is its unconventional controls, including the absence of traditional stalks for indicators and wipers. Instead, these are operated by buttons on the steering wheel, which, while innovative, can be somewhat tricky to navigate. The gear lever between the seats and the manual paddle shifts require a specific ritual, which might be complicated for some, while the tiny buttons for cruise control and other functions demand nimble fingers.

The Roma also features a unique “marinetto” dial on the steering wheel, allowing drivers to switch between modes that adjust braking, traction control, steering, and suspension for optimal performance. Whether you’re cruising in comfort, engaging sport mode for a more thrilling drive, or navigating wet conditions with stability settings, this dial offers a level of flexibility that enhances the driving experience.

Though the Roma’s aluminium body construction makes it lighter than it appears, it still feels substantial, planted, and agile on the road. Despite being a large coupe, the Roma’s interior feels cosy, offering adequate space for both driver and passenger. The medium-sized touchscreen in the centre console is conveniently placed for easy access by both parties, making it clear that the Roma is designed for couples who enjoy driving together.

As with all Ferraris, the Roma offers an array of bespoke options. The use of premium materials, such as full-grain Frau leather, Alcantara trim, and carbon-fibre accents, is impeccable. The interior is a fusion of luxury and functionality, with the meticulous craftsmanship evident throughout.

The Roma’s design is refreshingly simple, yet striking. Its shark-nose front and the body-coloured grille make it stand out without being overly flashy, setting it apart from its rivals like Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz. Ferrari’s design philosophy for the Roma embraces understated glamour rather than excessive glitz, making it a true classic in the making.

Ferrari’s roots lie in creating track-focused cars, but over the decades, they’ve honed the art of producing luxury road cars, such as the Roma, that balance beauty, power, and comfort. The Maranello factory in Emilia-Romagna continues to produce these hand-built masterpieces, contributing to a rich legacy of automotive excellence. The world is undoubtedly better for having Ferraris like the Roma, just as the Derbyshire Dales are better for being explored behind its wheel.

Arrivederci, Roma. This remarkable Ferrari will leave you smiling, no matter where your journey takes you.

The actor shares his reflections on personal choices and the pain of losing his mother before starting a family

Andrew Garfield has candidly discussed the societal pressure he has felt throughout his life to settle down and have children before reaching 40. In a recent interview with British GQ, the 39-year-old actor expressed the struggle of accepting a path that diverges from societal expectations.

Reflecting on his life journey, Garfield admitted that releasing himself from the expectation of having children by the time he turned 40 has been a challenging process. “It’s about accepting a different path than what was kind of expected of me from birth,” he explained. “There’s this idea that by this time, you should have done this and have at least one child, and there’s a certain amount of guilt I carry around that.”

Garfield, who has been candid about his personal life in the past, also touched on the emotional difficulty of his mother Lynn’s death in 2019. He shared the heartache that his potential children will never have the opportunity to meet her. “I would’ve loved for my mum to meet my kids, if I ever have any,” Garfield reflected. “She will be there in spirit, though. I know she’s there for all the big moments, and that’s a comfort.”

Garfield’s mother passed away from pancreatic cancer just before he began filming The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and the actor explained that the grief of her passing remains a profound part of his life. “Life is a perpetual practice of letting go,” he said. “Letting go of how things should look or feel, and that’s a big one to let go of, but we carry on.”

As for his current relationship status, Garfield has remained private after recent reports speculated about his break-up and subsequent reconciliation with model Alyssa Miller. The actor has chosen not to publicly comment on these personal matters.

While reflecting on his future and his family, Garfield noted that life is unpredictable. “Life is in charge. We’ll see what happens. I’m curious,” he added.

The December/January issue of British GQ is available on newsstands and for digital download on Tuesday, 29 November.

The cardiovascular researcher triumphs over tough competition to take the coveted Bake Off crown

Syabira Yusoff, a 32-year-old cardiovascular research associate from London, has emerged as the winner of the 2022 Great British Bake Off, beating fellow finalists Sandro Farmhouse and Abdul Rehman Sharif in the highly anticipated final episode of the Channel 4 baking competition.

“I can’t believe it. This is the biggest achievement of my life,” Syabira exclaimed after being named the winner. “All the hard work, the trial and error, it has all been worth it. I’m so proud of myself.”

Throughout the series, Syabira stood out for her unconventional flavour combinations and distinctive baking style, earning the title of Star Baker for three consecutive weeks. Reflecting on her journey, she described being a finalist as “like winning the lottery.”

“I’ve never been the top person in any competition before,” she confessed. “Maybe baking is my hidden talent that I only discovered recently.”

For the final challenges, the three contestants were tasked with preparing a summer picnic, with the challenge described as one of the most difficult in the history of the show. Syabira impressed the judges with her “no porky pie” made from aubergine and mushroom and a heart-shaped sandwich featuring broad beans and coriander paste, which judge Dame Prue Leith called “unusual” but “delicious.”

In the final technical challenge, Syabira faced some setbacks, with her summer pudding bombe failing to set. Despite this, Abdul secured his first technical challenge win of the season.

The ultimate test, the showstopper challenge, required the finalists to create an edible sculpture themed around “our beautiful planet.” Syabira opted for an orangutan holding up a forest, with Hollywood praising the colour work, though he suggested the animal’s face could have been more detailed.

Judges were impressed with her black-pepper genoise sponge, which was covered in a chocolate and hazelnut buttercream fur, with Hollywood calling it “delicious.” Dame Prue also appreciated the shortbread used for the orangutan’s head, calling it “buttery and very crisp.”

The final saw a return of co-host Noel Fielding, who had been absent earlier in the competition due to illness.

Sandro, a 30-year-old nanny from London, impressed the judges with his decoration skills throughout the series, though his final showstopper was criticised for being “a bit messy.” Hollywood praised the flavour of his lemon sponge despite some technical issues with timing.

Abdul, a 29-year-old electronics engineer, was consistent throughout the competition and was awarded Star Baker in the semi-final. His final display was less well-received, with Dame Prue calling his choux buns a “proper failure,” although she praised his biscuits.

The final saw the return of family and friends to Welford Park Estate, marking a significant reunion after two years of COVID restrictions, where previous contestants gathered to congratulate Syabira on her victory.

Radio host challenges Hancock’s sincerity after his public plea for forgiveness on the reality show

Chris Moyles didn’t hold back in criticising Matt Hancock after the former health secretary asked his I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! campmates for “forgiveness” on Friday night’s episode.

During the show, Hancock was questioned about his breach of his own Covid-19 guidelines while serving as health secretary, as well as the controversial affair he had with Gina Coladangelo. After offering an apology and requesting forgiveness, the Conservative MP’s sincerity was questioned by Moyles, who didn’t believe Hancock was being genuine.

“What exactly are you sorry for, Matt? What are you asking forgiveness for?” Moyles asked, suggesting Hancock’s words lacked authenticity.

“I think he’s not being real, and it’s really bothering me,” the radio host added, expressing his doubts about Hancock’s motivations.

A young woman is saved by a ride-share driver after harrowing escape from a sex trafficking ordeal in Seattle

A young woman narrowly escaped the clutches of a violent sex trafficker after making two desperate attempts to flee, including jumping from a third-story window. The 20-year-old woman, who had been trafficked from California to Seattle by her abuser, Winston Burt, 30, was eventually rescued by a ride-share driver who engaged in a gunfight with Burt as he tried to flee.

According to prosecutors, the woman, identified only by her initials H.A., had been forced to perform sex acts in exchange for money and had been severely beaten after attempting to leave her trafficker. During one attempt, H.A. jumped from a high window to escape, but she was not successful until a second escape attempt led to her being aided by a driver who intervened in the attack.

Burt, who used the street name “Dice Capone”, was arrested shortly after the incident. Authorities revealed that Burt had been running a sex trafficking operation across multiple states, forcing young women to work for him in Seattle, California, and Arizona. The women were expected to make thousands of dollars per day and were entirely controlled by Burt, who provided food, housing, and clothing, but took all their earnings.

The woman’s escape unfolded when, after another violent attack by Burt, she was forced into a car where she tried to get help by running across a busy highway. In a dramatic turn of events, a ride-share driver, who witnessed her distress, stopped and helped, but Burt pursued them in his car, opening fire on the vehicle. The ride-share driver returned fire until they were able to reach safety and contact the police. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Burt has been charged with a range of serious offenses, including human trafficking, assault, and a drive-by shooting. He remains in custody, and prosecutors have warned that further charges may follow as they continue to investigate the extent of his actions.

Former Health Secretary claims he broke no laws, but admits to breaching his own rules

Matt Hancock has admitted to breaching his own Covid-19 guidance, though he insisted he did not break any laws, during an exchange on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!

In a candid conversation with his campmates on Friday’s episode, the former Health Secretary was questioned about his actions during the pandemic. Responding to a suggestion by Chris Moyles that he had received a lockdown fine, Hancock clarified, “I didn’t break any laws, guidance is different.”

He further acknowledged, “But the problem was, it was my guidance,” before adding that he was “looking for a little bit of forgiveness.”

The revelation has sparked further debate around Hancock’s time as Health Secretary during the pandemic.
